First brought to public attention by painters of the Hudson River School, tourists and nature lovers began flocking to the island in the 1860s. By 1880, the island hosted thirty g hotels. By the 'Gay Nineties', American social elites and business magnates, including the Rockefellers, Fords, Vanderbilts, and Carnegies, built summer h on the islands' most desirable land. Eventually the Rockefellers acquired most of the island, donating it to the Federal government as a public recreation.

Acadia National Park:

Acadia National Park Mount Desert Island, so named because of its many bald rocky mountaintops, has been a tourist destination since the mid-19th century, when it was disc by outsiders, artists, journalists, Hudson River School artists, and other patrons, known collectively as the 'Rusticators.' Undaunted by crude accommodate and simple food, they sought out local fishermen and farmers for accommodation and guidance. Summer after summer, the rusticators returned to renew friendships with local islanders and, most of all, to savor the fresh salt air, scenery, and relaxed pace. Soon the villagers' cottages and fishermen's huts fil overflowing, and by 1880, 30 hotels competed for vacationers' dollars. Tourism was becoming the islands primary industry. Drawing the attention of the w and influential, the island was designated as Sieur de Monts National Monument by President Woodrow Wilson in July 1916. In February 1919, the area's s was officially changed from a National Monument to National Park, making it the first National Park east of the Mississippi River. With the change to a Nat Park came a name change as well, to Lafayette National Park. It was not until January 1929 that the park was given its current name, Acadia National Par Acadia is unlike most other National Parks as its creation was encouraged by numerous private individuals. One, John. D. Rockefeller, purchased a summer home in Bass Harbor in 1910. Rockefeller began buying up land on the island with the goal of creating a system of carriage roads to make 'one of the great views in the world' accessible to all.

Publication History and Census This map was created and published by Luther S. Landmark buildings are drawn in aerial perspective in black outline on white backgrounds, highlighted in red. The historical events and figures are often depicted in a whimsical manner, such as a 17th-century man admiring a pretty woman crossing the bridge over a canal which the map tells us was once where Broad Street is, and the opera singer Jenny Lind singing atop Castle Clinton in Battery Park. Boats from all eras are in the waters. In the corners are large illustrations of the Statue of Liberty, colonial figures and Native Americans. Only 2 copies found in the OCLC – at Temple University and Yale.

George Annand (June 9, 1890 - September, 1980) was an American graphic artist and cartographer active in New York during the middle part of the 20th century. Annand was born in Croswell, Michigan, the sun of a Scottish immigrant doctor who immigrated to the United States via Canada. He received his early education at a one-room schoolhouse in Croswell before he and his parents relocated to Detroit. It was in Detroit that Annand was first introduced to the arts, enrolling in Art School. Later, as a young man, Annand move to New. York City, where he continued his artistic studies at the Art Students League. In 1920 he married a childhood friend, Elizabeth Sinclair, who had been widowed during World War I. He adopted Elizabeth's two children and she and Annand shortly thereafter became pregnant with a third child. With a family to support and another bun in the oven Annand turned to the booming New York advertising industry, taking work with the National Biscuit Company (NABISCO. He did well at NABISCO painting, as he liked to joke 'Fig Newtons in their native habitat. He also took freelance work designing illustrated book covers. One of his first such jobs was illustrating a cover for C. E. Montague's Right off the Map. Naturally, given the nature of the work, the cover featured a map incorporating pictorial elements with aspects of baroque era cartography - Annand's first pictorial map. The Wall Street Crash of 1929 hit Annand's interests hard and he lost his job a Nabisco. Refusing WPA work for reasons of personal pride, Annand managed to get by on odd illustration contracts for various companies including publishers like Doubleday, Doran, and Charles Scribner, as well as pictorial map work for the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, General Foods, Sinclair oil, and more. His cartographic work eventually drew the attention of the Chicago based map publishing giant Rand McNally, who commissioned him to produce two of their popular "Romance Maps.' During and after World War I business began to pick up again and Annand produced a huge corpus of pictorial maps. His style combined decorative elements from 16th century Dutch decorative cartography, fine calligraphy, and more contemporary pictorial work. He wanted his maps are noteworthy for their clarity and the sense of space they convey. Annand was, according to Stephen Horsby in Picturing America: The Golden Age of Pictorial Maps, 'a cartographer's cartographer.' It depicts the region as it was considered before the British government commissioned advanced surveys of the subject. The geographic portrayal of the coast of New England is quite detailed, and features extensive hydrological information off of the coast. Curiously, however, Boston Harbor is shown to be dramatically larger than its actual appearance, and Cape Cod is shown to be an island. In the interior, Lake Champlain is depicted to be dramatically east of its true location, and New York's Lake Seneca is creatively shown to be a massive sea that drains into the Hudson Valley. To the north, the portrayal of New France is equally fanciful, as "Mont Royal" Island, the site of Montreal, takes on a massive, attenuated form immediately adjacent to Lake Ontario. True to Homann's artistic signature, the map features a finely-engraved cartouche in the lower right corner that depicts American scenes of commerce and nature. One of the most celebrated cartographers of his day, Johann Baptist Homann established the most successful German publishing house of the eighteenth century. His prolific business, which was inherited by his family after his death, dominated Germany's map market for over a century, and produced some of the finest maps and atlases of the age. He established himself in Nuremberg, and by 1715 was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After Homann's death, the business was taken over by his son, Johann Christoph. From 1730, the firm was entrusted to committee of family members, the Homann Heirs, who published maps and atlases for the next two generations, maintaining the high standards set by Johann Baptist.

McCorkle, New England in Early Printed Maps, 724.1; Portinaro & Knirsch, The Cartography of North America, 116, Goss, The Mapping of North America, 50; Sellers & Van Ee, Maps & Charts of North America & West Indies, 807;.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0210/6626/files/DSC_0001_dda8bde5-6870-4561-bc01-7142061ff556.jpg?v=1696878964
le-coste-nord-ovest-dell-america-e-nord-est-dell-asia-delineate-sulle-ultime-osservazioni-del-cp-cook-1798
Le Coste Nord Ovest Dell' America E Nord Est Dell' Asia Delineate Sulle Ultime Osservazioni Del Cp. Cassini issued this map in his 1798 atlas to illustrate the discoveries made by James Cook. Cook was the first to accurately chart the Alaskan coastline and provide a detailed mapping of the Aleutian Islands. Cook's zigzagging route is shown as he skirts the Aleutian Islands, passes through the Bering Strait into the Arctic Ocean, and then turns back to sail south along the Siberian Coast. Here the Aleutians are collectively identified as Isole Alessiane, though many of the original islands are clearly given indigenous names. A large decorative cartouche in the lower left depicts four American Indians and a baby. He was a disciple of Glovanni Battista Piranesi. He Invented new form of projection used for an atlas of the kingdom of Naples issued by Glovanni Antonio Rizzi Zannoni. Cassini is best known as a globe maker and is considered the last of the great 18th century globe makers. His maps are distinctive for their fine engraving, dark strong impressions, and elaborate distinctive cartouche work. Unlike many map and atlas publishers of the perlod, Cassini did all of his own engraving work - this impregnating each map with his unmistakable style. Cook began sailing as a teenager in the British Merchant Navy before joining the Royal Navy in 1755. He was posted in America for a time where he worked Samuel Holland, William Bligh, and others in the mapping of the St. Lawrence River and Newfoundland. In 1766 Cook was commissioned to explore the Pacific and given a Captaincy with command of the Endeavour. What followed were three historic voyages of discovery, the highlights of which include the first European contact with eastern Australia, the discovery of the Hawailan Islands (among many other Polynesian groups), the first circumnavigation of New Zealand, some of the first sightings of Antarctica, the first accurate mapping of the Pacific Northwest, and ultimately his own untimely death at the hands of angry Hawaiians in 1779. But even worse than the automobile was the real estate boom in the years before the First World War, as agriculture made way for “estates”—garish, private and hostile to horseback riding.

Beginning with a two-square-mile tract of property under the ownership of several Piping Rock members, the Committee developed a network of paths over two hundred miles long through a district nearly ten miles square, avoiding wherever possible the motorized traffic of macadam roads. Trails were marked with green enamel signs bearing the initials “P.R.C.” – originally standing for “Piping Rock Club” but easily broadened to mean “Private Road Committee.” Still, to ensure that newcomers to the trails didn’t get hopelessly lost, the Committee printed maps of the district, as evidenced by the Society’s 1924 edition

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0210/6626/files/DSC_0001_5176c1d3-e5ab-4ea2-b87c-cd90139abec4.jpg?v=1776359393
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0210/6626/files/DSC_0001_5d445622-f4f2-4707-baa6-b1df6231fe41.jpg?v=1778521502
