'Arms Of The Doges of Venice' (English translation)
The list of doges of Venice begins with Paolo Lucio Anafesto, the first doge, elected in 697, and ends with the 120th doge, Ludovico Manin, who abdicates in 1797. This armorial of 1903 entitled "Stemmi dei dogi di Venezia" represents the coats of arms surmounted by the ducal cap of these 120 doges painted in gouache. For lovers of Venetian heraldry.
And cap or doge with the date of elevation to the throne featuring 120 colourful & exquisite heraldic coat-of-arms & the dates of their reigns of the Venetian Republic dating from the 7th to the 18th century (697-1797).
For more than 1000 years, the chief magistrate and leader of the city of Venice and later of the Most Serene Republic of Venice was styled the Doge, a rare, but not unique Italian title derived from the Latin Dux- Doges of Venice were elected for life by the city-state's aristocracy.
