Brassaï (1899 –1984) was a Hungarian–French photographer, sculptor, medalist, writer, and filmmaker who rose to international fame in France in the 20th century.

Brassai's photographs of the underworld of Paris night-life. Throughout the 1930s Brassai would spend his nights visiting the forbidden parts of the French capital - 'its brothels, its whores, its pimps, its opium dens, its transvestite cafes.' He recorded these visits with his camera and the resulting photographs, unpublishable for decades, are reproduced here for the first time alongside his own words.

English language edition. First published in French in the same year.
