Leyel is best known as the founder of the Society of Herbalists, the Culpeper stores and her mid-century books on British herbalism.

In the 1920s she developed an interest in food and wine and wrote a number of cookery books including the 9 volume 'The Lure of Cookery' series for George Routledge & Sons. These slim volumes evoke the sensibilities of the late 1920s and early 1930s in Britain with the use of well weighted paper and elegant fonts and design. Leyel's growing interest in herbs and herbalism influence this title in particular. In the preface she evokes the C17th author John Evelyn and his definition of a salad then goes on to reference many other suitable native and wild herbs.
