Terry goes to summer with her cousins 'The Wades' and on the very train she arrives in is another summer visitor to her cousin's farm: a Horse named Cassandra, a big red hunter who needed a place to stay as a loan from friends who had closed their place. A summer of adventures - a barn fire, the local horse show, Terry's dare-devil ride on Cassandra, a prowling stranger, and a successful circus to raise money for a new saddle. The mare's visit is cut short without warning, however, and the news of her subsequent shipment to Virginia is followed by a secret moonlight ride with a mysterious conclusion and a big surprise for all at the end of the story.
