Yale's mascot is a bulldog because of the original mascot, Handsome Dan, who was purchased in 1889 by a student named Andrew Graves. The dog became popular with students for his appearance, his willingness to be around crowds and bands, and his fierce reaction to the color crimson and tigers, which represented rivals Harvard and Princeton. Yale was the first American university to have a live animal mascot, and this tradition of a bulldog named Handsome Dan has continued for generations.
