The story follows Philip Nore, a competent but somewhat unmotivated, aging steeplechase jockey who also works as a talented amateur photographer. His life takes a dramatic turn when George Millace, a widely disliked racetrack photographer, dies in what appears to be a routine car accident.
When Millace's home is ransacked immediately following his death, Nore discovers a hidden collection of photographic negatives and photographic puzzles. As Nore uses his own knowledge of photography to develop and analyze the hidden film, he uncovers evidence of a massive web of track corruption, bribery, and blackmail. His investigation quickly turns dangerous, transforming him from a passive observer into the killer's primary target.
