This narrative travel guide takes one back to the era when the French Rivera was exploding on the world scene, becoming a year-round resort—playground to Gerald and Sara Murphy, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Willy Maugham, and various exiled Romanovs (well, at least who were those who escaped Russia with sufficient baubles to continue their former lives of leisure). The author was an Englishman who had been frequenting the Riviera since the latter years of the 19th Century. He covers the hotels, the cities, the customs, climate, the best months to visit, the best modes of transport, and much more. The period dust jacket is a favorite of collectors and in perpetual short supply.

“[O]n the Riviera you can have the best of both worlds. Simplicity and solicitude and the unspoiled beauty of the coast and mountain and forest, when you want them, and then, when you tire of nature and of quiet, crowds and carnivals, luxury and decorated beauty of women.”
