Compiled from printed books, periodicals, and in some cases unpublished works, the author gives some idea of the profusion of talented artists and scholars who were working in this field. With one or two exceptions, all the plates are from books of octavo or small quarto size, and almost all are reproduced approximately the size of the originals.
