(KM): I was asked by David and Janet Bruce to sell David’s parents (David and Evangeline) libraries in Georgetown and London. As so many books had originally been purchased at Heywood Hill, and because John Saumarez Smith was my most important and beloved mentor, I asked them to partner up. What an experience, and happy to say, what a grand success!

The greater part of this collection came from their memorable set in Albany, but a large proportion had one of the two Staunton Hill bookplates, probably designed in the 1930s. This was the period when David Bruce was married to Ailisa Mellon and before he became the model American ambassador. It was then that he collected books: literature, history and Private Press books. Thereafter the libraries in Virginia and Georgetown were added to without the same methodical approach: the Bruces accumulated rather than collected, and their shelves reflected the range of their accumulations.
