“Hand and Soul” is a narrative by the painter and poet, Dante Gabriel Rossetti. It was written in 1849 and appeared in the first issue of the short-lived Pre-Raphaelite journal, The Germ, in January of 1850. It is one of the few examples of short fiction to be published in this periodical; most of the works in The Germ were poems, pictures, or essays about art.
The story is not so much an entertaining tale as a meditation on art and spirituality, as Rossetti recounts the artistic development and mystic experience of a fictional, thirteenth century Italian artist.
