In 1867, C. Vanier, a bookseller-publisher in Paris, published a book titled Histoire chronologique du vêtement (homme) jadis et aujourd'hui suivie de l'art de se vêtir au XIXeme siècle (Chronological History of the Garment (Man) Formerly and Today followed by the Art of Dressing in the 19th Century).
This book, measuring 7.5" x 5", contains 166 pages and includes 21 plates illustrating men's costumes by Felmann and Coutard's workshops. The book is said to be complete with a comparative table of operations.
The book was published during a period of significant changes in fashion, according to the Fashion History Timeline. 1867 saw the increasing popularity of princess-cut dresses for women (without a waist seam) and a greater emphasis on back volume as the crinoline began to disappear. For men, trousers became more narrowly cut in the "French style". This period also witnessed the rise of mass production in the needle trades due to the invention of the sewing machine.
