Very readable story of a steeplechase jockey's life. As a youngster "Rip" Applin had been spoiled by friends richer than himself. On coming down from Oxford he was happy to accept an ideal job looking after the estates, and more particularly the horses, of Ted Bonnamy, who had a score of hunters, a salmon reach on the Dee, a grouse moor and - a lovely young wife. It was a pleasant prelude to a more dramatic turn of fortune's wheel which was to bring Rip dazzling success as a steeplechase jockey and then to a disaster which for a time wrecked his life. His regeneration and subsequent change of fortune both on the Turf and in the hazards of love a related by a writer who is inimitable in recreating the authentic atmosphere of the racing world.
