A first edition of Nancy Mitford's collection of essays, with illustrations by Osbert Lancaster. The essays are divided into two parts, 'English' and 'Foreign', and encompass the Mitford sisters' nanny, 'Reading for Pleasure', a visit to Russia, Louis VI, 'Portrait of a French Country House', and the meaning of "chic". Many of the articles first appeared in papers and journals such as The Sunday Times, The Times, Horizon, New Stateman, and Encounter.
