This book is a portrait of one of America's invisible minorities. The men are lawyers, stockbrokers, board chairmen etc. Their wives usually combine raising a family with civic and cultural activities. The children live in rooms only slightly less grand than those of their parents. Their towns and neighborhoods are extraordinary havens, brimming with the good things of life. These people are, in Robert Cole's words, the "privileged ones". Their way of life is distinctive and disappearing and it is captured in 70 penetrating photographs by Mary Lloyd Estrin.
