Charles Nicholson designed for Sir Tom Sopwith Endeavour II, a beautiful and very fast yacht. Unfortunately for him, W. Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens had designed a better boat for "Mike" Vanderbilt. Ranger was to become known as the Ultimate 'J'. She won every race in the series, and of the 37 races of her one and only season, she lost only two.
