Lord Derby’s racing colours are traditionally black with a white cap. These iconic silks, registered by the 13th Earl of Derby in 1788, have been used for over two centuries by the family.

Colours: Black silks, white cap.

Significance: These are among the oldest registered racing colours still in use in British racing.

Usage: These colours were notably worn by Lord Derby’s horses historically and are maintained by the current Lord Derby.

Collectibles: These colours are famous enough to have been featured in the W. Britain’s Racing Colours series of lead figures (No. 237).

The 13th Earl of Derby, Edward Smith-Stanley, who registered these colours, was a key figure in the history of the sport and established the Oaks in 1779 and the Derby Stakes in 1780
