This book is a much-loved collectors’ classic. Jenny Akerstrom (1867–1957), a renowned Swedish cooking teacher, published her cookbook in 1929 under the title Prinsessornas Kokbok, dedicating it to three of her celebrated students, the princesses Margaretha of Denmark, Märtha of Norway, and Astrid of Belgium. Their pictures appear on the cover of the book, as well as on a page of the forematter.

The English translation, published by Albert Bonnier in 1936 as The Princesses Cook Book, was an immediate hit. Although it has a substantial Scandinavian leaning (37 recipes for herring and a couple for lutefisk), it also has a broadly upscale European character, ranging from poached eggs with creamed lobster and beef stroganov to jellied wood grouse and a show-stopping jellied orange cake.
