The Collector: Alfred B. Maclay (1871–1944) was a prominent American collector, best known for his world-class libraries of sporting literature and his passion for equestrian and botanical pursuits (including the famous Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park).

The Auction: The collection was sold via public auction over two days on April 10 and 11, 1945, by his estate.

The Contents: The catalog detailed rare seventeenth-to-nineteenth-century books, manuscripts, and art covering topics like fox-hunting, falconry, horse racing, angling, and shooting.

Mr. Maclay formed one of the finest American libraries of books on sports, also a collection of American glass, which was sold at auction in 1935 for $24,000.
