Important study of society in America by May King Van Rensselaer, the New York socialite and outspoken member of the New York Historical Society who was instrumental in the founding of the Museum of the City of New York. In the opening chapter she writes "It is a far cry from the stately, patrician Society that New York knew in pre-Revolutionary times to the loose, rather indiscriminate social circle of to-day".
