Francois Eugene Turpin, the French inventor of the explosive Melinite, believed the character of the inventor was modeled after him and sued Verne for libel. While Turpin lost the suit, it was later confirmed that he was correct in his suspicion when a letter between Jules and his brother Paul mentioning the matter was discovered.
