Financier Edward F. Hutton built the Palm Beach Bath and Tennis club in 1926. Among the oldest social clubs in Palm Beach, it sits across from Mar-A-Lago, former estate of Marjorie Merriweather Post, Hutton's wife and a leading American socialite and founder of General Foods, Inc. The Palm Beach Bath and Tennis Club was designed by architect Joseph Urban.

The Donahues were yachting enthusiasts and fixtures of the "old money" set in Palm Beach, Florida, and Southampton, New York, where Hartline remained for many years.
