Schwander's CALLIGRAPHY (Calligraphia Latina), which was first published in Vienna in 1756, is one of the legendary books in the graphic arts. It has long been recognized as perhaps the most beautiful and most ambitious collection of continental calligraphy ever published, and it has been impossibly rare. It was never reprinted. This is the first reprinting of this important work since its original publication some 200 years ago. It is now reprinted in its entirety - complete and unabridged, with all the thousands of beautiful single-line specimens of the original edition. A glance through it will show you why it has never been surpassed in richness of illustration, in beauty, and in tastefulness. Schwanderner's CALLIGRAPHY is not only a remarkable plate book for anyone interested in beautiful calligraphy; it is also an inexhaustible source of first-rate decorative material for those concerned with the graphic arts. It contains more than 300 ornamental initials (forming 12 complete alphabets) in the most varied calligraphic manners: florid script, block letter overlain with flourishes, flamed letters with dotted flourishes, letters built out of rosary beads, architectural motifs, plant and animal motifs and many more. It contains more than 150 extremely ornate calligraphic frames and panels; more than 200 ornamental flourishes and more than 75 calligraphic pictures. A special feature consists of 14 symbolic plates devoted to the major European nations of the day.
