The VAT 69 Gold Cup was a historic platform tennis (paddle tennis) tournament held at the Sea Pines Plantation in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Sponsored by VAT 69 Scotch Whisky, it was highly significant as the first-ever televised, professional play-for-win platform tennis event.
The landmark tournament took place on November 10th and 11th, 1973. It featured the top 16 nationally ranked men's teams competing for a $10,000 prize pool and a 10-day trip to Europe. Despite being held in the typically warm South Carolina climate, the weekend was infamous for an unexpected cold front that brought temperatures down to 35 degrees and a blanket of snow on the courts. The final round was ultimately won by the team of Bob Kingsbury and John Mangan.
The event was so unique that players were outfitted in custom, richly embroidered navy blue blazers provided by the clothier Chipp. These limited-edition jackets rarely surface in vintage and antique apparel markets, offering a glimpse into the early days of televised racquet sports.
