This book is the result of a collaboration between an historically-minded decorator and an architectural historian, both vitally concerned with the preservation of English country houses. Its approach is fundamentally one of the social history; explaining how new forms of decoration were introduced and came to be used in the context of life in a great house. This is examined in the light of contemporary documents and with reference to interesting interiors still surviving.

The aim of the book is to create a sense of that harmony and balance that was so crucial to the 18th Century and is the essence of all great decorations. The many illustrations, mostly taken specially, include both general views and details, and reproductions of original 18th century drawings.
