Humorist Irene Kampen’s other major book was the inspiration behind The Lucy Show. It is really no surprise then, that this novel is the most humorous book on weddings since Father of the Bride a generation earlier. The protagonist is a beleaguered mother-of-the-bride planning her daughter’s “perfect” 1950s-style wedding amidst the cultural upheavals of the 1960s. No one cooperates, and fate refuses to intervene, leaving shattered nerves in their wake.

“The Bantu and Hindu people frequently contract mock marriages with a tree . . . The mother of the bride is expected to water the roots.”
