Mistinguett symbolised a particular period of the Parisian story. From the Folies and Moulin to some of the greatest stages of the early twentieth century. For many a woman, to be remembered for her legs would be a dispiriting experience, not so for Mistinguette whose legs were insured for 500 000 francs. She was proud of that. When she died Cocteau noted drily that it was appropriate that she should 'crumble away' as had the days in which she had shone brightly.
