Mouton Rothschild: Paintings for the Labels showcased over sixty designs made for the Mouton label in a synergy of art and wine, an imaginative ambition of the owners of Château Mouton Rothschild: first Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902–1988), then his daughter Baroness Philippine. In an annual tradition begun in 1945, painters have created original artworks for Mouton Rothschild, left entirely free to follow their creative instincts in exchange for ten cases of wine, including, of course, bottles from the year for which they provided the label.
The variety of styles and formats were presented in glass display cases, like those used for butterflies, by the designer Francis Lacloche. Every work was thus isolated in its own individual environment, its charm and originality captured in glass like wine in its bottle—each a labor of love for Mouton Rothschild by some of the greatest artists of our day.
