Bound by F. Bedford (1799-1883) he was an especial protege of The Duke of Portland, and was the best English binder of his time.
The artists included are Sir A W Callcott, Turner, Holland, Danby, Cheswich, Collins, Redgrave, Lee, Cattermole, W J Muller, Harding, Nasmyth, Richard Wilson, E W Cooke, John Constable, P De Wint, Cox, Gainsborough, Roberts and Stanfield.

Each plate is followed by a short critique by Thackeray. Thackeray was an old friend of Marvy, a French artist, who took refuge in London after the chaos of 1848.
