Novel, set in New York, about a tormented homosexual (the only kind to be found, pretty much, in the popular literature of the day) trying to come to grips with his true nature. In spite of its stereotypical elements, bibliographer Anthony Slide found it "powerful and fascinating," particularly singling out a passage depicting a Harlem drag ball as "one of the most detailed, contemporary, nongay accounts of such gatherings."
