The August 1960 issue of Town & Country Magazine was dedicated to the Ft. Worth, Texas lifestyle. Ben Hogan graced the cover of the magazine. The article described the brand-new Shady Oaks Country Club built by Ben’s long-time friend and the person who sponsored Ben during the first years on the tour, Marvin Leonard. Ben provided his opinion to Marvin prior to the purchase of land and design of the course. “This is my pet,” Ben was quoted as saying about the course. Robert Trent Jones design of the golf course required tens of thousands yards of earth to be moved to sculpt the course they envisioned. The cost was probably three times higher than most other courses built at that time, but it turned out to be well worth the extra costs. Hogan became a member and practiced at the course often and regular. He was quoted about the course: “Anyone who is building a golf course anywhere in the world and doesn’t come down to see what has been done here will be making a big mistake.”
