The 'Chivas Regal Trophy' was conceived as a horseracing competition between Great Britain and America, where two teams of top jockeys, drawn from the respective rival nations, competed against one another in a three-race-challenge over distances of five furlongs; one mile; and a-mile-and-three-quarters. Jockeys were awarded points for where they finished in each race with totals going toward the team's overall score.

The inaugural competition was held at Sandown Park 22nd October 1980. The U.S. team won. It was hoped that it might become the horseracing equivalent of the Ryder Cup but, in the end, it was a short-lived competition which only took place one more time (with the British team winning). However, the event drew together some of the era's greatest jockeys.
