This lovely book is a well written and detailed historical account of Yaddo, the famous artist's, writer's and musician's colony located on 400 acres in Saratoga Springs in the State of New York, written by Marjorie Peabody Waite in 1933. The story chronicles Yaddo's beginnings from 1787, when Jacobus Barhyte (1754-1840) was deeded the acreage for his courage as a soldier at the 1777 "Battle of Saratoga", by General Horatio Gates, a Revolutionary War general... Spencer and Katrina Trasks, early investors in the Thomas Edison Company, purchased the property in 1879, and built a large mansion where they received cultured guests for many decades... After Spencer's death in 1909, and Katrina's passing in 1922, the property became a writer's colony through a Trust in 1924... And the rest is a good and big part of American Modernist history! Illustrated with engravings by Penina Kishore.
